Salary Range: The full pay range for this role is $XX to $XX annually. The target range for this position is $XX to $XX annually. We generally base our salary decisions on factors such as internal equity, candidate work and/leadership experience, educational credentials, and in some cases, candidate work location.

 

Scope of Job: The Manager of High Voltage Support Services will provide the leadership and oversees technical support personnel in the operation, maintenance, repair, and training of BOP &HV electrical equipment for wind, solar, and battery storage projects. This role requires a blend of technical expertise, project management, and leadership skills to ensure projects are completed safely, on schedule, and within budget. The manager will also play a key role in business development, customer relations, and ensuring compliance with all relevant codes and safety regulations.

Responsibilities

Responsibilities:

  • Provide organizational leadership to provide strategic vision of High/Medium Voltage Distribution, Energy Storage, & Solar Support Services and effectively communicate organizational direction.
  • Enforce operating model policy compliance with keen focus on contract, regulatory, and pricing compliance; refine operational policies over time to enhance business outcomes.
  • Responsible for demonstrating leadership that leads to a strong culture of Safety & Quality on related project sites. Coach, train, and mentor high voltage specialist to help them meet their specific program goals and assist in implementing process improvement best practices.
  • Assist procurement as the Subject Matter Expert in the preparation of various contracts, requests for proposals (RFPs), and Scope of Works.
  • Lead and manage all phases of high voltage projects, from planning and budgeting to execution and closeout.
  • Develop and monitor preventative maintenance plans for electrical high voltage distribution systems.
  • Oversee the performance of NETA high voltage maintenance and acceptance testing, ensuring all procedures meet or exceed industry standards.
  • Serve as the technical expert on high voltage systems, providing guidance and troubleshooting assistance.
  • Ensure that all work complies with specifications, regulations (e.g., OSHA, NERC), and safety standards.
  • Develops, plans, and implements technical, systemic, and work process changes needed to improve efficiency, quality and productivity and strive for operational excellence.
  • Drive continuous operational productivity, efficiency, and EBITDA improvement through program execution and KPI governance, greater use of shared services capabilities, process change and automation.
  • Instruct, train, and assist site personnel in safe work practices, IR, battery testing and maintenance. Ensure compliance with industry safe work practices by site technicians and contractors performing BOP & Substation work activities.
  • Performs final reviews of maintenance and repair test reports. Works with site and asset managers to propose follow-up actions, as necessary. Ensure work performed is correctly documented and confirms with the scope being performed and meets regulatory requirements.
  • Be onsite during planned outages to make any executive decisions related to substation maintenance and repairs as needed. Ensure unsatisfactory test results/conditions recorded are resolved, verified, and addressed before HV specialist demobilization and restoration of equipment.
  • Develop safe work practices and techniques associated with substation maintenance and repairs to include types of equipment to be utilized, materials needed, and any associated specialized tooling necessary to perform the work.
  • Interview, select, and train HV specialist in the servicing, troubleshooting and repairs of medium and high voltage collective systems, including overhead power lines, underground cable systems, substation switching equipment, power instrumentation and transformer equipment.
  • Support site managers with planning and budgeting of planned substation maintenances and repairs. Assist and give technical direction during unplanned outages to restore plant to normal operations in a safe and timely manner.
  • Act as a key contact for clients, contractors, and other stakeholders to ensure project objectives are met.
  • Make sales calls to major accounts, establish relationships with new clients, and prepare proposals for services.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Supervision of Others

  • Responsible for the overall direction, coordination, and evaluation of HV Specialist and Control Engineers.
  • Provides leadership and guidance to employees throughout the organization.
  • Responsibilities include interviewing, hiring, and training employees; planning, assigning, and directing work; appraising performance; rewarding and disciplining employees; addressing complaints and assisting in providing appropriate resolutions.

Working Conditions: 40% of time is spent in the office environment, utilizing computers (frequent use of various Microsoft software/programs), phones, and general office equipment. 60% of time is spent outside of the office working with site mangers, technicians, and contractors in the performance of BOP/ HV training, repairs, and maintenance of EDF power solutions facilities. While on job site must wear personal protective equipment (PPE), including hard hat and safety glasses at all times. Each job site may be different and must be accessed individually. Travel will be required based on needs of company.

Fiscal Responsibilities: The employee is responsible for the creation and management of departmental budgets in excess of $2 million and must work within the budget constraints as authorized by the Executive Team, while successfully following all policies and procedures related to fiscal responsibilities.

Qualifications

Education/Experience:

  • A minimum of 10 years’ experience in the high voltage systems and substations to include utilizing electrical technical documentation, including schematics, and electrical circuit and technical drawings or a Peng in Electrical Engineer accepted in lieu of experience.
  • A minimum of 5 years of direct supervisory experience.
  • Completion of a formal apprenticeship program or equivalent combination of work experience and technical training required.
  • Must be bi-lingual in English and French Canadian at a minimum.

Skills/Knowledge/Abilities:

  • Working knowledge of the renewable energy industry HV best practices, CSA and provincial requirements, and diagnosis/repair of common substation failures.
  • Ability to work well across multiple company departments and with 2nd and 3rd party contractors in resolution of issues identified in the field during different phases of a project.
  • NETA or NICET certifications or other component specific high voltage certifications a plus.
  • Ability to quickly analyze issues, prepare comprehensive analysis and recommend solutions and alternatives for identifying/solving specific issues.
  • Highly motivated with the ability to manage multiple tasks with minimal supervision.
  • Ability to communicate effectively across all operational levels of the organization as well as with suppliers and customers, exercising appropriate tact and diplomacy to accomplish objectives.
  • Highly experienced in using and understanding testing and diagnostic equipment utilized for high voltage collections and transmission systems.
  • A strong understanding of varying electrical codes, NETA requirements, IEEE Canada, IEC standards, CSA Z462/Z46, and Canadian Provincial Regulations.
  • Excellent computer skills including Word, Excel, database, Outlook, SAP, OSI Pi and various statistical analysis tools.
  • A strong understanding of battery maintenance, testing and documentation, underground fault locating,
  • protective relaying operations, fault analyzing and event reporting, Oil sampling and DGA analysis, and Thermography.
  • Must possess excellent people skills and have strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Fluent with common industrial operations management tools, techniques, and methods. SAP, SCADA, data management software, ERP or similar.

  • Must be willing and able to travel throughout North America, or internationally as required or directed.
